Sustainable Development Goals

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity, for people and the planet, now and into the future. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) represent an urgent call for action by all countries to realize the 2030 Agenda.

Gender equality is not only a fundamental human right but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world. Therefore, achieving gender equality and women’s empowerment is integral to the entire 2030 Agenda. While SDG 5 specifically targets gender equality, 10 additional goals include gender-specific benchmarks, acknowledging the interconnections between women’s empowerment and a better future for all.

As the lead United Nations agency for gender equality and women’s empowerment, UN Women has fully aligned the principles, priorities and Integrated Results and Resources Framework of its Strategic Plan 2022–2025 with the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs. The framework has 14 SDG indicators at the impact and outcome levels, including 10 pertaining to SDG 5.

UN Women is a custodian or co-custodian for six SDG indicators. It is responsible or co-responsible for collecting data and monitoring the indicators. The 2030 Agenda principle of leaving no one behind is deeply anchored in UN Women's work. Learn more here.
