UN Women in action: Strategic insights and achievements

Advancing SDGs: UN Women's impact and key achievements
In 2024, UN Women Thailand's programme in partnership with line ministries, especially the key strategic partners i.e. the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, Office of Small and Medium Enterprise Promotion (OSMEP) and Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) has led to the successfully advanced gender equality and women's empowerment (GEWE) and the localization of SDG 5, and SDG 16 as well as the contribution to the UNSDCF's outcome 3 through key thematic priorities, which respond to UN Women's three impact areas including (1) the development and application of gender equality and women's empowerment, and (2) women's increased economic opportunities, as follows:
Women, Peace and Security (SDG 16): With the direct support of UN Women Thailand to localize Women Peace and Security agenda, the National Action Plan on Women Peace and Security was drafted and reviewed and endorsed by the Sub-Committee on Women Peace and Security and to be promulgated in 2025 to address both the traditional and other emerging security issue. In partnership with Civil Society Organisations in the area of prevention of human trafficking, UN Women contributes to the improvement of response and prevention mechanisms, ensuring that grassroots insights informed broader anti-trafficking strategies and fostering a gender-sensitive approach leading to more inclusive, nuanced, and effective anti-trafficking strategies that align with the UN "Leaving No One Behind" (LNOB) principle. Both WPS and trafficking projects are contributing to peace, justice and stronger institutions.
Women’s Economic Empowerment (SDG 5): Under the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs) and in partnership with multi-stakeholders, UN Women Thailand has highlighted market mechanism, in both public and private sectors, a driver to achieve women’s economic empowerment and advance gender equality. It has developed women entrepreneurs’ business skills, knowledge, and result in a marketplace of 170 women-owned/led businesses to scale up for their products’ capacity to business procurement value chain. The project plays a pivotal role in augmenting opportunities for women in managerial positions in the private sectors, including c-suite roles, board of director, in the private sectors, and especially women-owned/led enterprises in micro and small enterprises.

In 2023, UN Women Thailand's programme implementation and partnership with line ministries, especillay the key strategic partner (Ministry of Social Development and Human Security) has led to the sucessfully advanced gender equaily and women's empowerment (GEWE) and the widely localised SDG 5, SDG 16, and SDG 17, as well as the contribution to the UNSDCF's outcome 3 through key thematic prirorities, which respond to UN Women's three impact areas including (1) the development and application of gender equality and women's empowerment, (2) preventing and responding to violence aganist women and girls, and (3) women's increased economic opportunities, as follows:Women Peace and Security: With the direct support of UN Women Thailand, the National Action Plan on Women Peace and Security was drafted and it was already reviewed and endorsed by the Sub-Committee on Women Peace and Security. The draft WPS NAP will be further submitted to the Committee on the Promotion of the Development of the Status of Women, the National Committee on Policy and Strategy for the Development of the Status of Women, and the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Council respectively to further review and endorse.
Women’s Economic Empowerment: In partnership with multi-stakeholders, UNW TH has promoted women’s economic empowerment as a successful mechanism to advance gender equality and women’s empowerment. UN Women supported the establishment of the Local Implementation Learning Center (LILC) at Prince of Songkla University in Pattani on 6 June to localize SDG and empower women and youth through economic empowerment in the Southern border provinces. In addition, the Women’s Economic Empowerment and Learning Center (WEE Center) was established on 22 September in Chiang Khong, Chiang Rai province.This center serves as a dedicated learning space for (currently more than 350) women in Chiang Khong and the Northern border provinces, fostering sustainable initiatives to promote and support women in communities. By providing a platform for the development of skills and knowledge, and a marketplace for their products, the WEE Center plays a pivotal role in augmenting women's income and securing career opportunities and contributing to enhancing the self-esteem and confidence of women, empowering them to play an increased role and amplify their voices in public and social activities.
Gender-responsive budgeting and procurement: UN Women advances gender responsive budgeting through capacity development of 15 line ministries and partners with private corporations to advocate the implementation of a gender-sensitive business culture and gender-responsive procurement. This initiative also supported women-owned SMEs to link up with these corporations to secure equitable access for women to networks, finances, and markets. This public-private partnership led to 92 large corporations adopting gender-responsive procurement principles and resulted in 101 MSMEs capacitated.
