Nurturing an empowered workforce and advancing an inclusive UN-Women culture

During the reporting period, the CO delivered on its talent acquisition recruiting and onboarding two international staff, two national staff at an NOB level and three UN Volunteers. For the first time, the CO doubled the number of international staff as part of its goal to strenthen the team for improved results. The recruitment of the three national staff under FTA contracts was part of the CO's initiative to improve contracts in order to retain talent. With the additional staff, the CO was able to deliver timely on its programmes. The newly recruited staff led and supported the establishment of multiple partnerships that saw CO improve its efficiency and effectivements in the delivery of its programmes. To further stengthen the team and to expedite delivery, the CO focused on new staff orientation on the new systems and completion of mandatory courses. The CO further provide learning opportunities to all personnel both internally and externally within the region. The trainings strngthened the personnel's understanding of the entire Programme Manament cycle, fraud risk management among others therefore contributing to high quality annual work plan, timely donor reports, mid year reporting and risk register validation. In addition, the CO continued to embed the culture of perdormnance management ensure 100% completion of the 2023 performamce evaluation and the individual work plans for 2024.

Advancing business transformation:

During the reporting, the CO coordinated the African Girls Can Code (AGCCI) Hackathon, a practical tech competition, showcasing the digital skills of young women across Africa held in Rwanda. The CO featured Ester Melina, an AGCCI alumni from Mozambique highlighting AGCCI's impact on youth development in coding and digital skills. This was a partnership with the Ministry of Education, Human Development (MINEDH), Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Action (MGCAS) and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education (MCTES) that organized the coding camps from 20-26th May at the Pedagogical University campus combining technical and motivational sessions. 70 girls from 4 Provinces (Maputo City, Maputo Province, Gaza, and Inhambane) were trained in Web Design, Robotics, Application Design, Scratch, Gender Equality, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Cyber Security modules. In addition, as part of the CO's business transformation, the CO continued to leverage common premises to streamline gender equality within other UN Agencies. Following the signing a new sub lease agreement with UNOPS, for the first time UN Women organized and influanced all agencies in Pemba to partipate in a town hall during the 16 days of activism highliging the subject of violence against women and girls in Mozambique. This was the case in Beira and Nampula as well. To highlight the fact that the CO takes an average of 10 business days to complete procurement process except for micro purchasing takes a maximum of two days

Assuring an accountable organization through principled performance

In 2024, UN Women Country Office continued to demonstrate great ability o reliably achieve objectives, address uncertainty, and act with integrity. The CO achieved 100% implementation of regular resources and 80% implementation of non core resources, by mid-2024 100% of the most significant financial findings were resolved promptly, indicating that the efforts of the Country Office have been fruitful and all audit recommendations were resolved by end of the year. There has also been a notable improvement in addressing the recommendations from the internal audit. This performance takes place, meanwhile implementation of programme activities and initiatives are registering commendable results., showing a good balance between operations and programmes. Advancing partnerships & resourcing; Effectively influencing for impact & scale

In 2024 UN Women Mozambique continued advancing partnerships to effectively influence change at scale. The CO has a total of 20,805 followers on Facebook and 1,379 followers on Twitter and is using both platforms to give visibility to the work of UN Women in Mozambique and implementing partners. It is also worth mentioning the efforts in partnership building and maintenance. Adding to the existing implementing partners, the CO also worked with: 1. AIESEC: MoU signed to work on youth engagement, advancing gender equaity and WEE. 2. FAO: conversations on-going and working on a joint-programming proposal on Blue Economy & Gender 3. WB: conversaitons on-going to establish agreements on gender and ICT projects and gender & Blue Economy. 4. Girl Move Academy: partnership established in the framework of AGCCI. 5. Vodacom: partnership established to work on EVAW. Dissemination of messages, private sectorengagementdialogues, etc. 6. EY: partnership established and MoU pending approval, to work on WEE matters. 7. GIZ: talks and meetings on track to collaborate on WPS projects. 8. PMCET: AGCCI partner, considered an implementaiton partners.NGOworkin on training women in ICT. 9. Standard Bank: meetings have been held to form a partnership regarding WEE and female access to financing. 10. Effective normative, programmatic and coordination products, services and processes

During the reporting year, UN Women Mozambique country office adopted the following signature interventions: 1. Gender Equality Accelerator 1: Women’s Equal Participation in Decision-Making & Institutions (Women Lead) - this was done through the work of ... alligned with support the development of measures to prevent, monitor and respond to violence against women in politics. the CO also aims to support the capacity-building of aspiring women leaders, candidates, elected and appointed office holders, to continue building a cadre of women political leaders and encourage young women and groups at risk of being left behind to enter public life in 2025. 2. Gender Equality Accelerator 3: Transforming the Care Economy (Transform Care) - together with UNFPA, UNDP, and... UN Women started implementation of the joint Programme on Care and Disability aiming at ... in 2024 the foundational work was done and 6 activities identified to be implemented in 2025 with a budget of 100,000 USD contemplaiting activities such as Assessment of the experiences and implications of unpaid caregivers and trainings to CSOs and government staff. 3. Gender Equality Accelerator 4: Decent Work and Entrepreneurship (Women and the World of Work) - under the Women Peace and Security and the Japan Suplementary Budget UN Women Mozambique implemented activities that promote access to Decent Work by Women and Young Women. This included training and 4. Gender Equality Accelerator 6: Ending Violence Against Women and Girls (Together to Zero VAWG) - this was done with implementation of the Catalan funded Project that worked with Community Leader in Gaza Province equiping them with skills and tools to advocate for the EVAWG in their communities. This also included fostering coordination between community leaders and the multisectoral coordination mechanism to support women survivors of violence at provincial and distritct level. X number of members of the multisectoral mechanism trained in ... Additionally this year’s organization of the 16 Days of Activism has been a remarkable demonstration of inter-agency coordination. Over 32,000 people were reached directly by the campaign with over 1,300 attending the launching event, 100 UN Staff [1] (80% women) members of the largest UN Humanitarian Operations in Mozambique, attending the One UN Day at the UHCR sub-office to reinforce the UN commitment to EVAW and advancing GEWE. A major highlight was the fifty male UN Staff reached by the dialogue on Positive Masculinities organized jointly with UNESCO to promote inclusive behaviors and reduce Gender Based Violence [1] Staff from different UN Agencies UNFPA, UN Women, UNHCR, IOM, WFP, FAO, UNOPS, WHO, OCHA and UNICEF working in Cabo Delgado Province. 5. Gender Equality Accelerator 7: Women, Peace and Security - UN Women continued implementing the Norway funded WPS project. Througout the year remarkable progress was made that included: 5.1 - two thousand and fifty-four (2,454) conflict affected women and young women with access to fifty-five (55) safe friendly spaces created and managed by the two hundred and ten (210) women peace sentinels to serve as safe heavens where women can find assistance, exchange experiences, and access essential services and resources. The 210 women peace sentinels were trained by the WPS project implementing partners. 5.2) Validation of the final version of the Second National Action Plan on Women Peace and Security (2025 – 2029) and is expected to be approved by the government of Mozambique by in early 2025. The process involved aproximately 1,900 (over 1,100 women) reaching conflict-affected people and internally displaced women, representative of women´s rights organizations, youth-led groups, rural women, women with disabilities to ensure the plan fully observes the LNB principle put in front the vision and aspirations of the key populations 6. Gender Equality Accelerator 10: Making Every Woman and Girl Count (Women Count) - in 2024 UN Women continued to be part of the Women Count project and continued working in close collaboration with the National Statistics Institute, this included training of trainers for all the government sectors (46 participants) key data holders and managers from MDAs and achieved the three expected objectives: 1. Enhanced the understanding and appreciation of senior officials in MDAs of the importance of quality assurance of administrative data; 2. Increased the understanding of the NQAF dimensions and its use within administrative settings; 3. Jointly was drafted an administrative data quality assurance road map for Mozambique. Additionally, UN Women provided technical support for the development of the new 5 year Strategic Plan of INE and the Gender and Statistics five year Strategy.
