With its unique and inclusive culture, UN-Women is an employer of choice with a diverse and highly performing cadre of personnel that embodies UN values
In 2024, UN Women continued to strengthen its position as an employer of choice by fostering a unique and inclusive culture that reflects the organization’s core values. This approach was underpinned by a commitment to diversity, equity, and the empowerment of its workforce. Building on the foundations laid in 2023 through the Inclusive and Empowered Workforce Action Plan, the organization advanced its strategic objectives to create a highly performing cadre of personnel that embodies UN values. In 2023, the CO personnel implemented key actions outlined in the Inclusive and Empowered Workforce Action Plan. These actions reflected the organization’s commitment to fostering an inclusive work environment. The plan prioritized recognizing individual aspirations and development plans, actively supporting professional growth and career advancement, and addressing barriers to diversity, equity, and inclusion within the workplace. Building on these efforts, UN Women enhanced its inclusive culture by achieving higher representation of underrepresented groups within its workforce, emphasizing gender parity, intersectionality, and cultural diversity. This progress was supported by targeted recruitment campaigns and partnerships with institutions promoting inclusivity. Additionally, the organization provided mandatory and elective training on unconscious bias, inclusive leadership, and allyship to promote an equitable workplace culture. The CO implemented dashboards tracking the completion of cyber security and diversity-related courses, which ensured accountability and transparency. The organization also promoted a supportive work environment by enhancing policies that supported work-life balance, such as hybrid work arrangements. Employee resource groups provided safe spaces for dialogue and advocacy on key issues, including LGBTQ+ inclusion, accessibility for persons with disabilities, and cultural exchange programs. In 2024, UN Women also focused on acknowledging and recognizing contributions. A structured framework for Individual Work Development Plans together with the goals set in the Performance Management and Development assessments enabled staff to align their career goals with organizational objectives, ensuring both personal growth and organizational success. Additionally, 100 per cent of personnel completed the required diversity and inclusion courses, such as “I Know Gender: An Introduction to Gender Equality for UN staff”, reflecting the organization’s commitment to continuous learning and improvement. UN Women remains in its mission to foster an inclusive, empowered workforce. Future initiatives include expanding mentorship programs to enhance career pathways for underrepresented groups, investing in technologies and infrastructure to support accessibility and inclusive workspaces, and continuing to refine policies and practices to meet the evolving needs of its diverse workforce. As UN Women reflects on its progress in 2024, the organization’s commitment to an inclusive and empowered workforce stands as a testament to its core values. By prioritizing diversity, equity, and inclusion, UN Women not only fosters a high-performing cadre of personnel but also exemplifies its mission to advance gender equality and human rights on a global scale. In Brazil, UN Women fulfils its mandate through a unique and inclusive organizational culture, supported by a diverse, highly skilled team dedicated to excellence and committed to promoting the core United Nations values, particularly equity and diversity.
