Improved socio-economic security of urban and rural women
Women market vendors continue to make strides in improving their socio-economic security and boost productivity through UN Women’s three-tiered approach: Value adding - Women vendors are now following proper practices on food hygiene and food safety when processing/value adding products for sale and even when preparing home cooked meals for the family. (A total of 351 women vendors completed value added training in 2021) Financial literacy – More and more women vendors are now saving and also investing their income. Partners are actively improving the financial inclusion of market vendors (e.g. partner Vodafone has opened up market vendor registrations to its mobile money product (M-Vatu) to enable them to make direct contributions to the Vanuatu National Provident Fund, a financial institution that has never been made accessible to the informal economic sector. Climate smart agriculture – Women market vendors, who are also farmers, have improved their skills and knowledge in agriculture with the view to increase productivity (produce more/better food for nutritional security and boost incomes) and enhance the resilience of their livelihoods (reduce vulnerability to climate-related risks and shocks).
