    Outcome insights and achievements

Outcome progress note for the year

GBV prevention strategies and action plans are implemented by UN, government and civil society in a coordinated manner and are informed by voices of women survivors of violence

This outcome has been achieved. In 2020 an enabling environment was created to further enhance multi-sector coordination as UN, government, civil society, private sector, communities and other role players visibly collaborated in efforts to address gender-based violence. The first ever National Strategic Plan and Femicide (NSP GBVF) adopted by cabinet and launched by the President of South Africa on 30 April 2020 served as a coordinating tool; while a multi-sectoral NSP GBVF Collaborative that began at the end of the June in 2020 has provided the platform for enhanced coordination. Read more about the NSP GBVF collaboration: https://sites.google.com/rapidresults.org/nsp-gbvf/home . Stakeholders aligned their interventions against the six pillars of the NSP GBVF and there is greater effort towards collaboration in delivering results against set goals using the 100 Day Challenge sprints. A joint weekly report was provided to the president by the Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities based on inputs from various government departments and reports that emerged from the Collaborative. UN Women SAMCO provided financial support to hire the technical lead drafter of the NSP GBVF who drafted the NSP GBVF as well as did the first print run of the NSP GBVF on behalf of the government of South Africa. UN Women SAMCO, in its role as chair of the Gender Theme Group, has played a pivotal role through coordinating UN agencies' technical and financial support to the Interim Steering Committee on GBVF as well as the NSP GBVF Collaborative.

GBV prevention strategies and action plans are implemented by UN, government and civil society in a coordinated manner and are informed by voices of women survivors of violence

In line with its technical advisory support to the Department of Women Youth and Persons with Disability (DoWYPD) in South Africa through secondment to the Department, UN Women has contributed to improved coordination amongst organizations and strengthened efforts to achieve the objectives of NSP on GBVF. Grouping and mobilizing organizations implementing the NSP according to pillars with self-managed working groups planning and implementing together in a multi-sectoral collaborative now known as the End GBVF Collective has led to better synergies. The MCO has contributed to better synergy and coordination amongst UN Agencies implementing GBV programmes. Following the completion of the Comprehensive National Prevention Strategy (CNPS) which the MCO also technically and financially supported, UN Women convened UN agencies that supported the development of the CNPS to map a way forward and a common UN position to present to the Department of Women Youth and Persons with Disabilities at the close-out meeting. UNW leadership in developing a tool for agencies to indicate areas of work has helped to streamline work and strengthen coordination amongst UN agencies in GBV programming thus contributing to improve programming and less duplications amongst agencies.
