Botswana has progressed to an upper-middle-income country status but remains among the top 10 most unequal countries globally. The economy heavily relies on mining, with limited agricultural output and high vulnerability due to HIV/AIDS. UN Women focuses on interventions under the first strategic priority of the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (2022–2026), on advancing gender equality through women’s economic empowerment, preventing gender-based violence and addressing HIV risks to young women.
Programme priorities include strengthening gender-responsive institutions. Key locations comprise rural areas and mining regions, and interventions emphasize reaching marginalized groups, including rural women, sex workers, women with disabilities, adolescent girls and women living with HIV/AIDS.
UN Women collaborates with the Resident Coordinator’s Office, Gender and Human Rights Theme Group and Joint UN Steering Committee. It supports localizing gender equality standards and upholds gender mainstreaming, monitoring and compliance through tools such as the UNCT-SWAP Gender Equality Scorecard.
