    Summary of country programme

DRC is is the most populous country in Central Africa and hosts 10% of the World’s biodiversity. Women and girls maknig up half of the total population. While progress has been made in advancing relevant gender policy frameworks and action, implementation is hindered by security, governance, accountability and institutional, health and economic challenges. UN Women works with instutional and civil society partners to transform social norms and practices to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment at every level of society.

UN Women has been in the Republic Democratic of Congo for more than 10 years. The office’s 2020-2024 Strategic Note is alligned on the National Strategic Development Plan (PNSD) and United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) 2020-2024. UN Women in DRC sets itself the following vision: « An inclusive, peaceful, and prosperous Democratic Republic of Congo, where women, girls, boys and men are free and secure, enjoy equal rights, and have equal opportunities to access a better life, to make their own decisions to improve their living conditions in order to achieve sustainable peace, security, the respect of human rights and women ́s rights for the attainment of sustainable development goals. »

Advancing SDGs: UN Women's impact and key achievements

A slight increase in the participation rate of elected women in national legislative elections, from 10% in 2018 to 14%. Capacity-building for women candidates, with technical support from UN Women, helped to achieve these results. Alongside other agencies (UNDP, UNesco), UN Women supported women's organisations in their lobbying for the revision of the electoral law. Following this lobbying, an incentive measure was adopted to encourage political parties to include 50% women on candidate lists in order to be exempted from paying the deposit. 18% of women were lined up. These aligned women, grouped together in Dynafec, benefited from a capacity-building programme on election preparation, political communication, leadership and coaching; the candidate's handbook produced by UN Women was used as a teaching tool. this result is in line with pillar 1 of the cooperation framework, mainly with section 1.3, and also helps to achieve objective 5.3 of the MDGs.The Office of the President of the Republic has set up the Agency for the Prevention and Fight against Trafficking in Persons (APLTP), which in turn has set up a hotline for reporting trafficking in persons. UN Women participated in the preparatory consultations organised with the Ministry of the Interior as part of the fight against GBV . link https://actualite.cd/index.php/2023/12/05/rdc-la-loi-portant-creation-de-lordre-national-des-sages-femmes-promulguee-par-le-chefThe National Strategy to combat gender-based violence was revised in June 2020. UN Women is supporting the implementation of this strategy. An evaluation of the revised strategy's action plan is scheduled for the first half of 2024.
