Advancing SDGs: UN Women's impact and key achievements

In 2024, Mexico marks a historic milestone with its first female president, ushering in a new era of equality and empowerment. The National Institute of Women now the Secretariat of Women, in collaboration with UN Women, strengthened the National Program for Equality between Women and Men (Proigualdad) 2020-2024, addressing Sustainable Development Goal 5, for gender equality. This collaboration mainstreamed and institutionalized gender perspective in public policies.
Proigualdad aimed to recognize, reduce, and redistribute domestic and care work among families, the state, the community, and the private sector. As a contribution to the National and Progressive Care System, initiative spearheaded by INMUJERES and supported by UN Women, general population has access to an information system on the supply of care services: Care Map of Mexico, to which the Care Observatory was added, allowing for geospatial location and analysis of information for public decision-making.
The collaboration produced knowledge products that contribute to the design of a comprehensive care system, such as Caring Fatherhoods: Reflections on Families and Transforming Gender Identities and Promotion of the Human Rights of Migrant Women in Mexico, reflecting on the culture of care. These results align with SDG 5.4: Recognize and value unpaid care and domestic work through public services, infrastructure, and social protection policies.
Proigualdad intended to improve conditions for all women, girls, and adolescents to access well-being and health without discrimination from a rights perspective. INMUJERES, with support from UN Women, provided more than 3,000 services (legal advice, psychological support, among others) to women in mobility situations in Tapachula, Chiapas. Moreover, 2,124 public servants enhanced their knowledge related to the new forms of violence incorporated into the legislation.
To raise awareness about migrant women rights, two audiovisual capsules were produced: Promotion of the Human Rights of Migrant Women in Mexico and Inclusion and Non-Discrimination of Migrant Women in Mexico, These results contribute to SDG 5.1: End all forms of discrimination against all women and girls everywhere.
Proigualdad strived to the inclusion of women in peace and security processes and conflict prevention. Around 30,000 women formed 1,600 MUCPAZ networks, promoting peacebuilding and conflict resolution in communities. Supported by INMUJERES, the Ministry of Security, and UN Women, these networks foster local women's involvement in violence prevention and social cohesion reconstruction. Additionally, 300 women assessed the impact of the Women Peacebuilders Networks Strategy at the National Dialogue of Women Building Peace in September 2024. This results support SDG 5.5: Ensure women's full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision-making in political, economic, and public life.
