Summary of strategy

UN Women’s Afghanistan Strategic Note 2023–2025 drives efforts to protect, amplify and sustain the rights, roles and voices of Afghan women and girls, countering their systemic exclusion from public life since the Taliban takeover in August 2021.

The programme prioritizes providing essential lifesaving and protection services; improving economic security through livelihood opportunities; investing in women-led civil society organizations; amplifying the voices of Afghan women and girls to support their centrality in decision-making; and coordinating system-wide accountability to uphold their rights and needs across the country’s 34 provinces.

Partnerships with women-led and women-focused civil society organizations, the private sector, UN entities and the international community amplify coherence, reach and impact. Strategic Note direct funding is crucial for quick, innovative and adaptive responses in an uncertain operational environment. Direct funding backs inclusive economic empowerment, a resilient women’s movement, and powerful, data-driven advocacy for women’s rights.
