UN Women’s Ethiopia Strategic Note 2022–2025 addresses gender equality and women's empowerment amid multiple shocks, including conflicts, drought and COVID-19. The programme is active in 5 of the 12 regions of the country, including Tigray, Amhara, Afar, Somali and Oromia.
UN Women focuses on women’s economic empowerment, leadership, governance, ending sexual and gender-based violence, peace and security, and humanitarian action. Key locations include conflict-affected regions. Approaches comprise capacity-building, advocacy for gender-responsive policies and essential services for women and girls.
Major partners are the Government of Ethiopia, especially the Ministry of Women and Social Affairs, as well as women-led and women’s rights organizations, the private sector, and development partners providing earmarked and direct contributions to the Strategic Note. Expected outcomes are improved gender equality, reduced sexual and gender-based violence, and enhanced women's empowerment and participation in leadership.
