Advancing partnerships & resourcing; Effectively influencing for impact & scale
In 2 024 UN Women Myanmar continued to leverage our existing partnerships to conduct joint communications activities to highlight the situation of women and girls in Myanmar and the work of UNW and our partners, while maintaining a security-informed approach.
We produced a second explainer article as part of a broader UNCG effort to make accessible information on the UN’s work in Myanmar available, through an article explaining the approach and need for Gender in Humanitarian Action: One Size Doesn’t Fit All: Why Gender Matters in Humanitarian Response:
In partnership with UNFPA and CSO partners that are part of the GIHA Working Group, UN Women Myanmar made data available on the gendered impact of severe flooding that impacted Myanmar following Typhoon Yagi in September through Gender-Impact Flash Updates. Two issues were released in October and November highlighting disaster impacts, gendered responses, and the expertise of the Gender in Humanitarian Action Working Group and setting a template for future crises.
UN Women Myanmar led advocacy efforts through the UN Gender Theme Group (co-chaired with UNFPA) for International Women’s Day, the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence and other key awareness days. Key results included:
Joint statement from UN Women and UNFPA: It’s time to invest in women and girls for a safer, more gender-equal Myanmar .
a partner toolkit , key messages and other resources to support UNCT and implementing partners to advocate on International Women’s Day.
Public events in Yangon for International Women’s Day and Pride Month organised in partnership with the French Embassy in Yangon and the French Institute.
UNCT joint statement for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women: #NoExcuse. UNiTE to End Violence Against Women and Girls .
16 Days partner toolkit with key messages and resources aligned with global UN Women campaigns.

CO also restructured its business processes aligning them to the requirements to implement its activities in the complex environment and creating much more efficiency that contributed to the CO delivery. For example, the CO extended a number of exceptions to polic ies , which were granted by HQ , in order to ensure increased efforts in partner implementation. Currently, the country office is decentraliz ing the micro purchasing process empowering Programme Assistants to initiate the process of procuring small low value items.
Nurturing an empowered Workforce and advancing an inclusive UN Women culture
In 2024 UN Women Myanmar efforts to nurture an empowered workforce and advance an inclusive workplace culture continued to focus on ensuring a safe and security-informed approach to our work , using adaptive management practices in line with the complex crisis context. The recruitment of a Country Programme Coordinator was completed in mid 2024, which is a significant contribution to strengthening our national management and leadersh ip capacity . International personnel continued to work from outside the country due to continuing challenges with getting visas to enter Myanmar . In 2024 UN Women took the co rporate decision to bring on board a Representative at the same time as filling the International OM position that had been vacant for some months . With the onboarding of new incumbents in these key posts we continue to take special measures to ensure team building, trust and coordination despite the challenges of geographical separation . This includes regular contact through appropriate and safe channels, twice yearly team retreats and brining colleagues together outside the country as needed for effecti ve management, such as through the Operations Retreat in August and convening of Programme team for workshops in Decembe r . Wellbeing of Myanmar based colleagues is a priority due to the special concerns related to working and living in a crisis context . I n 2024 th ere was a dedicated mental health one-day session provided together with the UN Clinic and self-care sessions at both team retreats as well as all team discussions on concerns related to conscription, electricity and fuel shortages with flexible work practices adopted as needed.
Effective normative, programmatic and coordination products, services, and processes
UN Women Myanmar has continued strong strategic planning, monitoring, reporting and evaluation practices. It has finalized its strategic note for 2024-2025 in line with UN Transitional Cooperation Framework (UNTCF) in Myanmar. The UN Transitional Cooperation Framework (UN TCF) 2024-2025 was also finalized and approved by the UN Country Team (UNCT). During the 4-day staff retreat in Chiang Mai from January 22-25, 2024, a comprehensive overview of the TCF, SN 2024-2025, and BWP 2024-2025 was shared to ensure a clear understanding of strategic direction and implementation plans. The first bi-annual reporting for UNTCF 2024-2025 and separately for Outcome 4 was also submitted for the period of Q1-Q2, 2024 .
