Summary of country programme

UN Women’s South Africa Strategic Note 2023–2025 intends to strengthen an existing gender-responsive legal framework rooted in the 1996 Constitution, which champions gender equality and women's empowerment. Despite being an upper-middle-income country, South Africa ranks low on global human development indices and faces deep inequality.

Collaborating with the Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities and the Commission for Gender Equality, UN Women supports the capacity of these institutions to enhance women's rights and promote gender equality and women's empowerment. Priority areas include addressing intersecting inequalities affecting rural black and migrant women.

Partnerships with UN and national bodies help to strengthen women’s leadership and political participation, especially in underrepresented communities, fostering inclusive development and democratic resilience.
