UN Women’s South Sudan Strategic Note 2023–2026 addresses gender inequality and women's empowerment in a post-conflict setting. The country is undergoing a transition that entails implementing a peace agreement, reducing humanitarian impacts, stabilizing the economy and returning to sustainable development.
The programme focuses on women’s leadership and political participation, economic empowerment, peace and security, and ending violence against women. It takes a humanitarian-development-peace nexus approach. Key locations include Western Bahr el Ghazal, Upper Nile, Jonglei, and Central, Western and Eastern Equatoria.
Major partnerships involve civil society, women-led organizations, government institutions and UN entities. The expected impact is that women and girls realize their rights and reach their full potential in a peaceful, inclusive, democratic and prosperous nation. This includes women's increased participation in governance, reduced gender-based violence and improved economic opportunities.
