Summary of country programme

UN Women’s United Republic of Tanzania Strategic Note 2023–2027 addresses gender inequalities shaped by negative social norms, economic exclusion, unpaid care work and discriminatory laws. It supports systemic, inclusive transformation across mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, aligned with national priorities and the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework.

The Strategic Note advances normative commitments, women’s leadership in local governance, economic justice, the prevention of and response to violence against women, and access to justice. Implemented in rural, peri-urban and refugee-hosting areas, it applies tailored approaches to reach youth, women with disabilities and women living with HIV. Gender data, gender-responsive budgeting and innovation are cross-cutting priorities.

UN Women leads gender coordination across the UN country team and supports the monitoring of international commitments. Partners include the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania, women-led and other civil society organizations, the media, the private sector and international organizations. Expected outcomes comprise increased women's leadership and participation in governance, economic justice and reduced gender-based violence.
