Outcome insights and achievements
Outcome progress note for the year
Caribbean people, communities, and institutions have enhanced their adaptive capacity for inclusive, gender responsive Disaster Risk Management and climate change adaptation and mitigation. (MSCDF Outcome 5)
As part of its gender-responsive climate change, disaster risk resilience and humanitarian action mandate, UN Women MCO Caribbean continues to foster and sustain strategic partnerships with NGMs and CSOs, providing knowledge products and capacity building opportunities to enhance women’s and girls’ resilience to disasters, hazards, risks and emergencies. The MCO also continues its advocacy role where CDEMA is concerned to ensure gender considerations are implemented in climate change, disaster risk resilience and humanitarian action mechanisms. As at December 2024, the MCO can report that approximately seven UN entities in the Caribbean region are implementing disaster risk reduction, resilience or recovery initiatives with a focus on gender equality and women's empowerment. UN Women, as a member of the United Nations Emergency Technical Team (UNETT- co-chaired by UNICEF and OCHA), for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, lead the Protection Cluster which was activated in July 2024 in response to Category 5 Hurricane Beryl in St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Grenada. As part of the Protection Cluster, UNFPA and UNICEF led, respectively Gender-based Violence and Child Protection. In addition to this, the Early Warning For All (EW4ALL) initiative is an example of an active inter-agency initiative in which UN Women, UNFPA, UNICEF and IOM have been actively involved in the consultation processes for Barbados and Antigua, co-led by UNDRR.
