    Outcome insights and achievements

Outcome progress note for the year

Favourable gender socio-cultural norms lead to an increased use of essential services by women and girls at risk or survivors of GBV/SGBV/HP and a decrease in VAWG

Changes in gender socio-cultural norms around VAWG, GBV and HP issues were recorded. These included the commitment of the Executive Governor of Cross River State to become a champion for gender equality and his pledge to ensure an increased appointment of more qualified women into decision-making positions as a step towards achieving gender equality in the state. The pledge was made during a HeForShe campaign launched by the Spotlight Programme in Cross River on May 25, 2021 where the Executive Governor was also recognized as the state’s ‘Champion for Gender Equality’. Also, at the HeforShe campaign launch, the paramount Ruler of the Obaniliku community - HRM Amb. (Dr.) Uchua Amos Uyimulam Item (JP) – was duly recognized and decorated following the successful elimination of the ‘money marriage’ in Obanliku LGA of Cross River State in 2020 with the support of the Spotlight Initiative. The ‘money marriage’ is a harmful traditional practice where young, underage girls were offered as ‘wives’ by their debtor-parents/guardians to creditors, usually older men, as repayment of loans in some part of Nigeria. Favorable gender socio-cultural norms have resulted in an increased use of services One Stop Centers provided to GBV survivors. In the reporting year, 391 persons accessed services at the Mirabel centre (369 females and 22 males). Further disaggregation by age shows that there were 310 survivors under the age of 18 and 81 adults. For the Nana Khadija centre, a total of 98 persons accessed services within the period with breakdown as follows: Males – 71; females – 127; children (0-18 years) – 172 and adults – 26. An increase in the number of clients who walked into the Centres to access post-incident services (psychosocial support, essential medical services, livelihood referrals) was observed from the month of March as a result of information materials disseminated to schools, education district offices etc.

Favourable gender socio-cultural norms lead to an increased use of essential services by women and girls at risk or survivors of GBV/SGBV/HP and a decrease in VAWG

520 women and girls from 15 and above were provided with essential GBV services for; Rape, Attempted Rape/Attempted Sexual Assault by Penetration, Sexual Assault by Penetration, Sexual Assault, Defilement of a Child, Others (e.g., Battery), at UN Women supported centers in Lagos and Sokoto 2022.
