    Summary of country programme

UN Women in Kiribati delivers two interlinked programme areas underpinned by support for coordination and normative processes:

    1. Ending Violence against Women and Girls through the Pacific Partnership to End VAWG Programme. Initiatives include:
    • Partnering with the Ministry of Women, Youth, Sport & Social Affairs to implement the Strengthening Peaceful Villages (SPV) programme which engages community members to prevent and respond to violence in their communities; provides support to the National Domestic Violence Counselling Framework, and to SafeNet to strengthen and coordinate services and referrals.
    • Partnering with the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre to support the Kiribati Women and Children Support Centre to provide high-quality, counselling and case management services to GBV survivors.
    • In addition, implementing partners are working to (i) support CSO-led initiatives to monitor the government’s commitments to gender equality and prevention of VAWG and the participation and engagement of CSOs in regional/national policy spaces, and (ii) support the Ministry of Education to progress the integration of Social Citizenship Education that promotes and includes human rights and the prevention of VAWG into school curricula.
    1. Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) through the newly established Women’s Resilience to Disasters programme provides a comprehensive package to strengthen the resilience of women and girls to ensure that their lives and livelihoods are resilient to disasters and threats, contributing to sustainable, secure, and thriving communities.
