Ensuring strong national ownership, UN Women coordinated two new Joint programmes with the European Union and USAID, as part of an interagency partnership. These are the first of their kind for the EU (in Egypt) and USAID (globally). Both programmes have been developed in consultation and in alignment with the national government counterpart, ensuring programme results are aligned to the country’s strategy for gender equality and women’s empowerment. The programmes build on successful models of implementation in the areas of Women’s Leadership and Participation, Women’s Economic Empowerment and Ending Violence against Women. UN Women is the leading agency under the EU funded programme, while a participating agency in partnership with UNFPA under the USAID funded programme.
