UN Women advances strategic partnerships with key stakeholders to drive the movements for social norms change and gender equality, including transforming harmful and/or discriminatory practices for women and girls
38 Ambassadors, Indonesian Minister for Development Planning, the Deputy Head of the National Counter-Terrorism Agency, three Directors General from the Foreign Ministry, and CEO of Southeast Asia's leading on-demand, multi-service tech platform, Gojek reaffirmed their commitment to promote women’s empowerment by taken a ‘no-manel’ pledge with UN Resident Coordinator and UN Women’s encouragement and the strong support of the Ambassador of Canada. The ‘no-manel’ pledge is a diversity pledge to decline speaking engagements in all public discussions where women’s voices are not represented. The pledge is part of a bigger move to ensure equal representation in all sectors in Indonesia. More private sectors and, for the first time this year, state-owned enterprises were being engaged by Indonesia CO this year. 70 Indonesian companies have expressed support for advancing women’s empowerment and gender equality by signing the CEO Statement of Support for the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs) this year. This is significant progress, compared to sixty-three new signatories in 2020 and nineteen in 2019. As a result of UN Women's support to these companies, at least ten of them actively involved in UN Women's activities were appointed as gender advocates in G20 EMPOWER, a business alliance for gender equality in the G20. In 2021 UN Women has laid a foundation to create a gender-responsive entrepreneurship ecosystem in Indonesia through a series of gender-sensitive business training, including the use of online platforms such as UN Women Indonesia’s increasingly popular WeLearn. At the end of the year, this effort was strengthened through a new partnership officiate with MoU signing with a financial institution, the Government Investment Center (PIP) to accelerate the economic empowerment of women ultra-micro businesses in Indonesia. The MoU provides a strong framework for leveraging synergies and advocacy efforts to drive equal economic opportunities. In 2021 strategic partnership with the Ministry of Women’s Empowerment Child Protection (MOWECP) was strengthened. UN Women provided advisory role to mainstream gender for Indonesia’s G20 presidency, especially for the G20 Empower and W20, and to support the engagement with key partners, including the UNCT. UN Women works with individual influencer to gain wider attention on gender equality issues in this reporting period. Together with UN in Indonesia and UNFPA, UN Women partnered with Indonesian renown stand-up comedian Sakdiyah Ma’ruf for the Comedy for Equality, stand-up comedy workshop, and show. The stand-up comedy show has been successful and has generated 37,758 views as of January 2022.

Indonesia CO's strategic partnerships, effective communication strategies, and advocacy efforts have contributed to supporting gender equality and women's empowerment agenda in Indonesia while contributing to CO's visibility and resource mobilization efforts. Additionally, the CO has continuously developed new partnerships with diverse actors/stakeholders to broaden the networks. 14 companies signed Women's Empowerment Principles in 2023 to advance gender equality in the workplace, marketplace, and community. The total number of signatories in Indonesia as of December 2023 is 181 companies. In 2023, our country office engaged in successful partnerships with eight key organizations, including ASEAN, the Ministry of Finance, the Government Investment Center (PIP), Kumpul.id, Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, UNICEF, UOB Finlab, and FWD Insurance. Activities ranged from supporting the WEPs Forum to knowledge-sharing sessions on preventing sexual exploitation, abuse, and harassment (PSEAH). Additionally, we collaborated with the private sector on initiatives promoting gender equality, women's empowerment, and positive norms change. Looking ahead to 2024, our focus is on strengthening collaboration with the private sector to sustain influence on their commitment to gender equality, women's empowerment, and resource mobilization opportunities, highlighting our dedication to impactful partnerships and leveraging resources for gender equality initiatives. Specifically on knowledge sharing on PSEAH, the country office has conducted three knowledge-sharing activities focusing on creating a safe workplace. These activities involved collaboration with ASEAN, the Ministry of Finance, and approximately 30 companies from across the region during the WEPs forum held in the Philippines. The aim was to foster discussions on strategies for enhancing workplace diversity and promoting inclusivity, recognizing the inherent value of diverse perspectives and experiences. Understanding the importance of engaging with the youth, collaboration with young people was strengthened this year. Nine youth organizations across UN Women and UNFPA networks advocated and campaigned for gender equality and ending violence against women during International Women's Day. Furthermore, five out of 30 applicants from universities across Indonesia, including from the eastern part of Indonesia, and 16 youth content creators joined our 16 Days of Activism commemoration in Jakarta. In 2023, we introduced a new initiative where we provide opportunities for young people to join the movement for the prevention of violence against women through a non-traditional approach (music and performing arts) and social media.
