UN Women in action: Strategic insights and achievements
View annual report narratives for the year
UN Women Mali actively supports the integration of gender considerations into policies, strategies, and economic systems. This was particularly evident in its support for the development and implementation of the revised Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) in line with the commitments of the Paris Agreement. These efforts have contributed to enhancing sustainable and inclusive livelihoods for women and girls, particularly in rural and fishing communities, by facilitating better access to markets, credit, and renewable energy solutions (SDGs 1, 2, 5, 7, and 13). In 2024, significant progress was made in the economic participation of women and girls. This is exemplified by the expansion of fish production across three hectares, yielding 27 kg/m compared to just 10 kg/m in 2021, and a 150% increase in the income of female producers (SDGs 1, 2, 5, 7, and 8). Targeted communities successfully responded to flooding this year and are now better prepared to manage the impacts of climate change (SDG 13). Support from UN Women enabled the expansion of the fish production area by three hectares in 2024, with yields reaching 27 kg/m (up from 10 kg/m in 2021). The income of female producers increased by 150%, fostering greater participation of women in the formal economy and wealth creation. A total of 3,000 producers and 17 support and advisory agents were trained across the entire fish value chain, including equipment installation and usagesuch as floating cages, stocking and harvesting techniques, processing, and marketing. The introduction of solar-powered equipment, including drying ovens, had a significant positive impact on producers health and environmental protection by reducing harmful emissions. Additionally, the provision of drying and storage equipment, along with a mini cold storage facility, considerably minimized production losses and reduced the carbon footprint of our interventions. This equipment also contributed to a reduction in the time women and girls spend on unpaid labor and domestic care, allowing them more opportunities for economic activities and education. Women now play an active role in coordinating the established consultation framework, ensuring their voices are heard in project development and community decision-making processes. The engagement of communities, technical bodies, and regional and local policymakers strengthens the ownership and sustainability of interventions, while also promoting cross-sectoral collaboration for the achievement of the SDGs (SDG 17).
Mali now has a roadmap as a reference document for all those involved in promoting gender equality thanks to UNW support. To contribute to SDG 5, 16, 17, the CO worked with the ministries of gender & territorial administration in its development for effective gender mainstreaming in the electoral process, political and administrative reforms in Mali. This roadmap (2023-2025) aims to strengthen the participation of women, in institutional, political and security reforms, and in the implementation of the new Electoral Law. Also, it aims to converge the empowerment and leadership of women defined in the State's framework documents such as the CREDD, the CSRE and the PNG. This desire to provide coordinated, appropriate responses aligned with national priorities underlines the commitment of the Transition's highest authorities to improve the conditions of its citizens positively and sustainably, for "a modern, peaceful, prosperous country that is proud of its cultural values. This respects the principles of equality and non-discrimination, participation, and accountability. It should also be noted that this roadmap is aligned with relevant international and regional legal instruments and agreements, such as: Universal Declaration of HR; CEDAW; CRC; Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities; ECOWAS gender policy and strategies; UEMOA gender policy and decisions. It lets to correct the inequalities and discrimination in rights between women and men in Mali. This Roadmap considers Malis challenges, such as the national security context, regional and international mechanisms relating to the "Women's Agenda", and their participation in national leadership, their involvement in the search for peace, and the establishment of sustainable governance. The effectiveness of such a scheme also requires the active participation of all stakeholders. UNW's commitment to funding all these initiatives and mobilizing partners for its implementation which is a major step forward in promoting gender equality and women's empowerment in Mali. The roadmap has been funded with 2,530,383 USD including UNWs contribution, although there is still a gap of 12,768,804 USD. Also, UN Women supported all the process until the availability of the roadmap through gender orientations, advises and funding divers workshop for the establishment of content - Mali: Feuille de route Genre 1 - YouTube The next step are: Setting up a piloting committee Creation of the Technical Committee (TC) Provision of technical assistance (consultancy) to the TC Technical capacity-building for members of the TC Equipment support for TC Mobilization of partners to finance and implement the roadmap Drawing up a players map involved in gender-reform-elections issues Carrying out a baseline assessment and developing a results framework Development of an advocacy note for resource mobilization Development of communication plan Support for the organization of roadmap dissemination missions
