UN Women has a presence in 14 out of 22 countries in Eastern and Southern Africa (ESAR) region. ESAR has a diverse economic outlook with some countries experiencing high growth rates but with persistent poverty and income inequality. Women's representation in parliament varies across countries, with Rwanda leading globally at 61%, and 9 out of 16 countries having more than 30% women in parliament. Violence against women is prevalent, and ESAR is home to several intergovernmental institutions with which UN Women has partnerships. Women's economic empowerment
UN Women's Climate Smart Agriculture program operates in 9 countries, empowering women in sustainable farming methods to secure food supply and livelihoods. UN Women also conducts gender analyses of COVID-19 fiscal response packages and collaborates with IMF in 4 countries to introduce gender responsive targets into IMF Country Programs. Rwanda and South Africa are part of the Care Economy program in climate-smart agriculture, with studies on childcare provision in Rwanda, Tanzania, and South Africa.

Data on Women and Girls Takes Centre Stage as Representatives from 40 African Countries Convene in Nairobi for the Joint Africa Gender Statistics Conference
More than 150 public and civil society actors from 40 African countries convened in Nairobi, Kenya for the Joint Africa Gender Statistics Conference taking place from 26 -30 September 2022.
Held under the theme ‘Gender Statistics Imperatives for Africa’, the Conference will interrogate gender statistics through the lens of Agenda 2063—the African Union’s blueprint for transforming Africa into a global powerhouse, the Sustainable Development Goals that support gender equality and women’s empowerment, and global guidance on violence against women data, among others.
