Affirmative action policy and legislative frameworks and measures (Federal and State level) adopted and/or implemented in Nigeria, to promote gender balance in political leadership and decision making positions.
In 2021, the on-going constitution review in Nigeria did not consider various submissions to the inclusion or review of clauses that addresses gender inequality through affirmative actions gender responsiveness of the legal framework. However, some states in the Federation have passed laws and policies to address gender inequality such as the VAPP Acts. Women's representation in elective positions in Nigeria is currently 4.5% 2019 at the federal parliament against 7.1% in 2015. The political environment will continually affecting women capacity to compete during elections due to insecurity and violence in elections, highly monetized political processes in Nigeria among others. If policies and TSM are not put in place the percentage of women representation might even go below the 4.5% in the 2023 elections. UN Women intends to collaborate with key and relevant stakeholders to support women's active participation in the 2023 general elections. UN Women since 2021 has commenced activities geared towards support and mentorship for young women in 7 states. over 3 million women have been supported to registered in the on-going INEC online registration as voters in Seven states. UN Women will continue to support these initiatives in 2022 and towards 2023 elections. UN Women will support the re-introduction to the parliament the Gender and Equal Opportunities Bill, which when passed will provide more opportunity for women

Mainstreamed gender in the constitutional review process by deploying a gender and constitutional reform expert who served as the only female in a team of 20 technical consultants who supported the senate constitutional review. Reviewed discriminatory provisions in the constitution and made recommendations for addressing such. Supported in the development of the 5 major gender bills in the constitution review process. Historically on February 4-5, 2022, members of the Constitution Review Committee adopted gender bills to increase women’s political process. That was the first time in the history of constitution review in Nigeria, that such gender proposals passed the committee stage. Sustained efforts to pass the gender and equal opportunities bill to address gender inequalities in Nigeria. Reviewed contentions in the GEOB to strengthen chances of its passage and mobilized religious and traditional leaders to validate the revised version.
