From 2014, UN Women Burundi has been supporting community-level resilience-building by reinforcing women’s economic empowerment, strengthening their effective participation and leadership in peace, security and humanitarian processes, and through efforts to eradicate violence against women and girls, using gender-transformative approaches.
UN Women’s comparative advantage in Burundi has been acknowledged by government, donors and other stakeholders, in the development of the National Action Plan (NAP) for the UN Security Council’s Resolution 1325 (2000), in building women leaders' capacities, in the development and dissemination of the Women’s National Agenda on Peace and Development, and in its close collaboration with Women Peace Mediators for social cohesion and conflict prevention.
UN Women is mandated to work with the government, CSOs, UN Agencies, and Women’s and Youth Associations to ensure progress on gender equality and women’s empowerment in Burundi and to implement the UN’s Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework and achieve Sustainable Development Goals 5 and 16, ensuring that no one is left behind.
